Our history

From the early days as a solo freelancer, to a team with over 50 years’ experience.

The History of Nectar HR

How it all began

Nectar HR was founded by Sonia Rai in 2011. After acquiring a part-time HR job whilst at university, Sonia quickly learned the ropes of the industry and moved on to work in-house for small and large organisations in the public, private and non-profit sectors. However, one thing became clear and that was working every day in the same office and doing the same HR activity day in, day out, wasn’t going to be for her.

Sonia loved HR but knew that her role in the industry was going to be of the self-employed variety.

The early days

The origins of Sonia’s HR entrepreneurship involve friends and family asking for advice or for little HR jobs here and there, which naturally led down the path of freelancing. In 2011, Sonia then registered Nectar HR on Companies House and had very successful few years of operation. One of the most exciting clients in the early stages of the business, was working with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. A very different and challenging task for Sonia as she had yet to work with musicians before.

What we’ve grown into

Flash-forward to present day, and what was once Sonia as a sole trading HR specialist has now grown into a passionate and dedicated team with an expansive and diverse range of clients. All Nectar HR’s clients are very different, spanning from small businesses to large organisations with 250+ staff members, and national and international conglomerates. The industries of the client base are also extremely varied. Health care, engineering, railways, tramways, fast food, special needs schools, education, and construction to name a few.

Nectar HR are proud members of both the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) as well as the Greater Birmingham Chamber of Commerce.

Our values and giving back

Giving back is a key value at Nectar HR for all staff members and it is incredibly important to Sonia to instil a charitable ethos throughout the company. Personally, she has been working on a voluntary basis with The Sikh Helpline for many years as their HR Lead. The Nectar HR team can also volunteer and give their time to charities and organisations if they wish.

Nectar HR also supports other charities on a pro bono basis. If you are a charity organisation and would like to discuss how we could support you, please get in touch!

Looking ahead to the future, Sonia sees Nectar HR continuing to grow across the UK, taking on more clients in diverse industries and growing the team.
